Braden Heil

Braden Heil joined the Saber staff in the fall of 2011 when Coach Mennig took his one year leave of absence and has been a great addition to the staff.  His energy and passion for the game are evident anytime you see him on the court.

Heil received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Kinesiology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2009. During his time at Illinois, Heil had the opportunity to be a student-manager for the Women’s Basketball program under head coach’s Theresa Grentz and Jolette Law from 2006-2009. During his three years, the Illini compiled a record of 49-48 and appeared in the WNIT twice. Heil’s duties as a manager included supervising other student managers, directing equipment, practice, and video needs for coaches, assisting with team travel plans and preparations, assisting in game tape editing and scouting videos, practice and game preparation, and helped in the skill development of the team, including All-Big Ten performers Lori Bjork, Jenna Smith, and Lacey Simpson.  Heil worked very closely with the entire coaching staff and director of operations on daily needs, including former Illini assistants that are current head coaches: Marsha Frese (UMKC), Karen Middleton (Western Carolina), and Tamika Louis (Delaware State).

During his summers, Heil has also been a frequent staff member of University of Illinois Women’s Basketball camps. He assisted with the organization and execution of the camps as a student-manager under Grentz and Law. More recently, Heil was a camp counselor & support staff member for Matt Bollant in the summer of 2012.

After graduation from Illinois, Heil moved back to the Kankakee area for the 2009-2010 season, where he was an assistant coach for the boys program at Bradley-Bourbonnais High School.  In 2010-2011 Braden secured a position as an assistant women’s basketball coach at St. Ambrose University in Davenport, IA. In his only season at SAU, Heil helped the team to a 29-5 record and a Midwest Collegiate Conference regular season and tournament championship before being knocked out of the Sweet 16 of the NAIA National Tournament.  Before leaving St. Ambrose, Heil was able to complete his graduate courses in the Master’s of Organizational Leadership program.

Since 2007, Heil has spent his spring & summer time in the gym as a part of U.S. Junior National’s & Blue Star Basketball staff. Heil has held a wide variety of positions while working events, but starting in the spring of 2011, Heil accepted the full-time position of Assistant Event Coordinator for USJN & Blue Star. As one of the main USJN Midwest contacts, Heil is heavily involved in the day-to-day operations of the organization, as well as overseeing event operations.

Heil is a native of Kankakee, and graduated high school from Kankakee High School.  While in high school, he was a three sport athlete & team captain in Golf, Basketball, and Baseball. He earned the Chief Kay Award in Golf and Basketball, the team award given to the athlete who most displayed a great work-ethic, had great school spirit, and took pride in their daily efforts on the team.
