St. Thomas More 65 - McDonald's Chicagoland Prep Classic: 4A #13: Geneva 57

The Sabers braved the bad weather and a 3rd quarter scare to come away with a 65-57 victory over 4A #13 Geneva High School today as part of the 24th annual McDonalds Chicagoland Shootout.  Sophomore Tori McCoy had 25 points and 17 rebounds, Senior Randa Harshbarger had 13 points and 7 assists, and Junior Liz Bristow had 16 points (including 6-6 from the FT line) The Sabers took a 9 point lead into halftime with the ‘big three’ (Harshbarger, McCoy, & Wallen) all in foul trouble.   A strong 3rd quarter surge by the Vikings as the Sabers sat back in a zone to conserve fouls gave the Vikings a 4 point lead heading into the 4th quarter which was their largest lead of the game.  STM  was able to go back to its high pressure defense in the 4th quarter and  pulled away after a 13-4 run to close out the game.  Geneva was led by senior Morgan Seberger with 21 points (4-11 3pter), and senior Oakland University signee Sydney Santos was held to just 2 points. The 2A STM Sabers are 20-2 and are now 3-1 vs. ranked 4A opponents this season (Victories over Neuqua Valley/Fenwick/Geneva & loss coming to Whitney Young) and still have 4A Mother McCauley coming to Champaign February 1. The Sabers head into the Sangamon Valley Conference tournament this week where they are the top seed and face off against Momence in the 1st round on Monday.  This will mark the last time the Sabers compete in this tournament & have been crowned 6 of the last 8 years.  The Sabers take a 21 game conference win streak into the tournament (37 is the record)
