Young too much for STM girls

Sun, 12/15/2013 - 12:03am

CHICAGO — Now the lessons can be applied and the work can begin. “I’m looking forward to Monday,” St. Thomas More girls’ basketball coach Chris Mennig said following Saturday night’s 73-43 loss at undefeated Class 4A Chicago Whitney Young. “We have a lot to work on.” Like last year, when the top-ranked Class 2A Sabers led the Dolphins in the second half in Champaign, STM was in contention when the third quarter began, trailing 33-29. Sophomore Tori McCoy picked up her fourth foul in the quarter, guard Randa Harshbarger — who made the trip on her own following her grandmother’s funeral earlier in the day — couldn’t find her deft shooting touch (finishing 3 for 15) and Young pulled away in the same manner the Sabers have while winning 10 games by an average of 36 points. “We got a taste of our own medicine,” Mennig said. “A little humble pie is never a bad thing. We’ve got this in perspective. Who in Champaign, who in 2A, gets to do this? On any given night, we may pull it off three out of 10 times. After fighting back in the second quarter, it was disappointing to see us lay an egg.” Liz Bristow led St. Thomas More with 12 points. McCoy and Lexi Wallen each had double-doubles. Wallen had 11 points and pulled down 10 rebounds. McCoy had 10 points and 10 boards. Harshbarger finished with seven points and six assists. Overall, the Sabers made 17 of 57 shots (29.8 percent). “We are all really disappointed,” Mennig said. “There’s no way it should have been a 30-point game. Realistically, it should have been 10 to 15 points. We’ll find out Monday where their minds are at.” The STM team attended Friday’s visitation for Harshbarger’s grandmother — one of the program’s ardent supporters — Philo’s Mary Miebach. “It has been an emotional week,” Mennig said.
