He’s Baaaaack!!!

Coach Mennig returned to the Sabers this April after serving as an assistant coach at Arizona State University last year.  Mennig was asked to help fill in on staff for while the WBCA (Women’s Basketball Coaches Association) President – Charli Turner-Thorne took a one year leave of absence.  Her long time assistant Joe Anders took over the helm & they asked Mennig to step in on staff to assist them for 8 months.  The team finished 20-12 and made an appearance in the WNIT tournament.  That marked the 8th year in a row for the Sun Devils to have over 20 wins and 5th year in a row to play in the post-season.

Defense and Post Player Development were the primary responsibilities for Mennig while with the Sun Devils. In his short time in the Valley of the Sun he helped the program reach a level of defense that found its way into the record books. The team set two Pac-12 records: Scoring Defense (53.3 – 16th nationally) & Blocks in a game (16). The Sun Devils broke four Arizona State records including: FG% Defense (34.2% – 11th nationally), Blocks/G ( 5.8/G – 11th nationally) as well as the aforementioned conference records. Along the way they held all but two teams under their scoring average – including holding nationally ranked #2 Stanford to 25 points below their average twice during the season. Also Senior post player Kali Bennett had a great turnaround in her final campaign – making the Pac-12 All-Defensive Team & breaking numerous ASU block shot records. At the culmination of his contract with Arizona State he was once again asked to be a presenter at the WBCA Convention on the topic: Recruiting: Cultivating Your Craft.

Mennig’s comments on the experience “It was a humbling opportunity to go back and see if I could still impact athletes at the college level.  I always tell my players ‘these are your memories not mine’ – but I can selfishly say that I walked away with one of my own memorires that I will always cherish.  I am just grateful for the experience that ASU gave me, and the support of STM to allow me to grow professionally.”

Mennig returns to the Sabers for his 7th season as many are picking this years 2012-13 squard to make another deep run in the state playoffs after a #12 state ranking last season.
