Oh What A Night!

STM gave 4A #1 State Champs Whitney Young all they wanted today but just came up short at the end losing 51-60 in Champaign.  Illinois, Iowa, Kentucky & Michigan State coaches were on hand in a packed Saber gym to watch this #1 4A vs. #1 2A battle.  The Sabers went into the 4th quarter with a 44-42 lead, but Kentucky bound Linnah Harper (#8 player in the country & member of gold medal USAB 16u team) took over and scored 12 of her 23 points in the 4th quarter to secure the road victory for the 15-3 Dolphins (pre-season ranked #5 in the country by USA Today).

Soph. Lexi Wallen led the Sabers 21 points, and Fresh. Tori McCoy collected her 11th double double of the season scoring 12 points and 15 rebounds.  The Sabers went scoreless on 3 straight possessions in the 4th quarter as Harper led the Dolphins back.  With 3:30 left to play and a 5pt lead Whitney Young went into ‘stall mode’ and STM was forced to put the Dolphins on the free throw line down the stretch to try to stay in the game.  Whitney Young went 6-8 from the line in the 4th quarter to secure the victory.

The Sabers forced the Dolphins to shoot 3-20 from beyond the 3pt line.  The lose snaps the Sabers school record 16 game win streak.

STM starts SVC tournament play on Monday with their 1st round match up vs. Momence at Iroquois West High School tipping off at 6pm.  The Sabers are going for their 6th title in 9 years participating in this tournament.  Coach Mennig is 5 for 6 on the sidelines at the SVC tournament.
